Many factors have contributed to the abysmal condition of Native Americans in the United States. Two of which had the most impact have been poverty and alcoholism. There are many possible reasons why Native American’s were introduced to alcohol. For instance, their religious practice incorporated alcohol to be able to achieve a transcendent experience. It was not escape from reality that Native Americans sought, but more about fulfillment and discovery of oneself. However, Native Americans were uneducated of how potent alcohol was and what was to come from it being abused by the uneducated, and younger generations. Unfortunately, Native Americans have played a more ambiguous role on proliferating and facilitating the spread of alcohol throughout their communities. Alcohol has led to many health conditions in Native Americans, including kidney failure, and blindness. These health conditions have also led to diabetes, and with little hope from loss of land, Natives Americans st ill to this day live in poverty. Enrico Fermi was a physicist whose important discoveries about the atom led to the splitting of the atom (atomic bombs) and the harnessing of its heat into an energy source (nuclear energy). Dates: September 29, 1901 -- November 29, 1954 Also Known As: Architect of the Nuclear Age Enrico Fermi Discovers His Passion Enrico Fermi was born in Rome at the very beginning of the 20th century. At the time, no one could have imagined the impact his scientific discoveries would have on the world. Interestingly, Fermi didnt get interested in physics until after his brother died unexpectedly during a minor surgery. Fermi was only 14 and the loss of his brother devastated him. Looking for an escape from reality, Fermi happened upon two physics books from 1840 and read them from cover to cover, fixing some of the mathematical errors as he read. He claims he didnt realize at the time that the books were written in Latin. His passion was born. By the time he was just 17, Fermis scientific ideas and concepts were so advanced he was able to head directly to graduate school. After four years studying at the University of Pisa, he was awarded his doctorate in physics in 1922. Experimenting With Atoms For the next several years, Fermi worked with some of the greatest physicists in Europe, including Max Born and Paul Ehrenfest, while also teaching at the University of Florence and then at the University of Rome. At the University of Rome, Fermi conducted experiments that progressed atomic science. After James Chadwick discovered the third part of atoms, neutrons, in 1932, scientists worked diligently to discover more about the interior of atoms. Before Fermi began his experiments, other scientists had already used helium nuclei as projectiles to disrupt an atoms nucleus. However, since the helium nuclei were positively charged, they could not be successfully used on the heavier elements. In 1934, Fermi came up with the idea to use neutrons, which have no charge, as projectiles. Fermi would shoot a neutron like an arrow into an atoms nucleus. Many of these nuclei absorbed the extra neutron during this process, creating isotopes for every element. Quite a discovery in and of itself; however, Fermi made another interesting discovery. Slowing Down the Neutron Though it doesnt seem to make sense, Fermi found that by slowing down the neutron, it often had a larger impact on the nucleus.  He found that the speed at which the neutron was most impacted differed for every element. For these two discoveries about atoms, Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938. Fermi Emigrates The timing was just right for the Nobel Prize. Antisemitism was strengthening within Italy at this time and though Fermi was not Jewish, his wife was. Fermi accepted the Nobel Prize in Stockholm and then immediately emigrated to the United States. He arrived in the U.S. in 1939 and began working at Columbia University in New York City as a professor of physics. Nuclear Chain Reactions Fermi continued his research at Columbia University. Though Fermi had unknowingly split a nucleus during his earlier experiments, credit for splitting an atom (fission) was given to Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1939. Fermi, however, quickly realized that if you split an atoms nucleus, that atoms neutrons could be used as projectiles to split another atoms nuclei, causing a nuclear chain reaction. Each time a nucleus was split, an enormous amount of energy was released. Fermis discovery of the nuclear chain reaction and then his discovery of a way to control this reaction led to both the construction of atomic bombs and of nuclear power. The Manhattan Project During World War II, Fermi worked diligently on the Manhattan Project to create an atomic bomb. After the war, however, he believed the human toll from these bombs was too large. In 1946, Fermi worked as a professor at the University of Chicagos Institute of Nuclear Studies. In 1949, Fermi argued against the development of a hydrogen bomb. It was built anyway. On November 29, 1954, Enrico Fermi succumbed to stomach cancer at the age of 53.

While those against them believe that a child’s immune system permits either a natural or acquired resistance to diseases than putting questionable toxic ingredients into a child’s body. I live in a community that is big on gang violence. I was born and raised by both BDs and GDs. I took on the life of the BDs from the time I could even say GDK. However, there was always this part of me that wanted out. But how do you tell the people who has raised you that you want no part of them anymore. It wasn’t until I turned 15 that I realized that this life that I was living wasn’t just affecting me; it was affect those I held close to me that had nothing to do with this life of destruction. As I watch those around me disappear from either a bullet or fear of the life I lived I started to rethink everything I had ever known. As the year went on, I questioned everything and one around me, and they all questioned my loyalty. The same people I called my brothers, sisters, uncle, ect. questioned if I was meant for their team still. So they tested me. I didn’t know anything about the test until it was too late. I had a brother, Amon, that knew the life of the BDs but never was one. Some say he was too scared; I say he knew he was worth so much more then what we were during with our daily lives. I loved Amon with all my heart and would kill anyone who even looked at him the wrong way. Even though he was my big brother, I was the one who was doing the protecting. Sometimes I just couldn’t protect him. The night of my 16th birthday my guys threw me a Super Sweet 16. It was turning out to be an awesome night. Then things went for the worst. I was inside the house with my friends when I saw Amon and his baby mama, Ashley, outside so I decided to join them. We were outside for about 30 minutes and then Ashley got cold so her and I decided to go inside. I asked Amon to come inside but he didn’t want to. Ashley and I hadn’t even made it to the door yet but we heard gun shots. Ashley and I hit the deck to be safe. It all happened so fast. Once the shots were done I called for my brother, but he didn’t answer. My guys came running out to see what happened. When I finally sat up, I saw what broke my heart in a million pieces. I ran to my brother, and as I laid my hands on him than became covered in his blood. He was barely breathing. I held him in my arms close to me telling him to hold and not to leave me. It wasn’t a minute later that he took his last breath and my brother was gone. This was my test. They tested my loyalty to them by taking away someone who I basically lived for. 16 shots on my sixteenth birthday determined who I would continue to live for. Amon was 19 when he died. He left behind a baby boy who will never know how it feels to have his father at his football games, or his high school graduation. They murdered my brother to lose my completely.
